Word for 2018 is…

A couple of years ago, I read an interesting article that suggested selecting a single word to focus on for the New Year versus setting several “New Year Resolutions” that most of us fail to maintain anyway within a very short time of adopting them. In response to the article, I decided to select a focus word for 2015, and it was an enjoyable experience so, for 2016, I decided to repeat the experiment, and again in 2017.

Now that 2017 is ending, and 2018 is on the horizon and approaching rapidly, I wanted to revisit my 2017 word for the year and then look to the future and my new focus word for 2018.

My word for 2017 was “stability” and boy did that ever miss the mark…or so I first thought. My passion has always been aviation, and this year alone I have had the incredible fortune to work for three different airlines! I relocated to Florida for several months and only then realized both the depth of the roots I had established in Arizona over the years and how much I valued them. November 6 was my first day working for my preferred employer in the aviation industry. It might not akin to the normal meaning of “stability” but this year’s life events have illustrated where my true stability lies.

For 2018, the word that I have chosen to focus on is “Growth”. Personal growth, financial growth,…regardless of the growth opportunities that come my way in 2018 I want to be ready to recognize them, grab them, and leverage the heck out of them. Moreover, not just growth for my own personal gain. Helping someone else to grow in their career or other area of life is quite rewarding in itself. Even when painful, growth is more valuable than gold.

So, what word are you going to focus on in 2018?

2017 in review

Although I made a couple of half-hearted attempts over this year to post something new to this blog, I’m saddened to see that my last actual post was made back on January 28. 2017 has been a wild ride of a year and, even in its waning days, shows no evidence that it is going to give me a break anytime soon.

These were the major events of my 2017:

FEBRUARY
Accepted a job with Alaska Airlines in Phoenix, then several days later accepted a position with Spirit Airlines and relocated to the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area.

APRIL
Acknowledged that, while I enjoyed working for Spirit Airlines, I hated living in Florida, so I loaded up the Jeep Wrangler with as much as it could hold and headed back to Arizona. It may have taken 4 days to drive to Fort Lauderdale but it only took me 3 to drive back to Chandler…I guess I was motivated to get home. Highlights of that trip were getting stuck in a 4+ hour traffic jam on the I-10 (Orange, Texas), an apocalyptic hailstorm (somewhere on the I-10 in Texas), almost running out of gas just outside of Fort Stockton (West Texas), and enjoying a 15+ minute greeting from dogs Sandy, Morgan and Ricky in the laundry room when I finally got home.

JUNE
Accepted a position with Mesa Airlines in Phoenix.

AUGUST
My youngest sister, her husband, and their three kids came to visit.

SEPTEMBER
My dog Sandy tore the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in her back right leg. It’s still a mystery as to what she was doing when it happened.

OCTOBER
Sandy underwent surgery to repair her torn ACL. She was miserable that night as the anesthesia wore off but we got through it somehow. She then began a long 8-week healing and recovery process.

NOVEMBER
Accepted a new position with American Airlines in Tempe, Arizona. Also settled on January 8, 2018, for my dog Ricky’s corrective heart surgery.

DECEMBER
Sandy tore the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in her back left leg. Am completely at a loss as to how she managed this one – she was inside the house and frequently within view all evening. She is scheduled for surgery (and another 8-week recovery period) on January 22, 2018.
